Asperger’s Experiences & Personal Growth: Stephen’s Evolution

Asperger's, my special interests, and their importance

Stephen McHugh Episode 12

Here, in this episode, I briefly talk about my experiences with living with Aspergers, before moving on to some of my special interests, and their importance to me in terms of my evolution with the condition. My interests are listed below, and have played important roles for me. These include in terms of  problem solving skills, de-stressing, pattern and shape recognition, improving my language and general understanding.

5:52 - 6:48 (Section on global warming, which I see as a sensitive subject, as there appear to be increased extreme weather events these days). It is during this section where I mention that I like to be more environmentally friendly, and hope to encourage others to do the same.

Weather and Astronomy 3:12 - 9:50

Piano and Music 9:52 - 13:40

Maths and Computer Curiosity 13:43 - 18:07

Unleashing Creativity through Writing and Photography 18:09 - 21:00

Through creative means, I have improved my language skills, leading to newer interests. These have allowed me to create worlds of my own through writing, based on my long term interests and life experiences, aiming to help others.  On top of that, recording colour and shape variety through photography has allowed me to appreciate the autistic spectrum more, including range of abilities and challenges.

Another thing I refer to is trying to find a balance between the amount of time doing a special interest and other important things, such as social skills development.
