Introduction  ( Start - 4:25)

Intro Music

Hello, wonderful listeners! And welcome back to another episode of the Stephen’s Evolution Podcast, where you can embark on a journey through my lived experiences with autism. I'm your host, Stephen McHugh, and I'm thrilled to have you here for another insightful episode.

I hope the beginning of 2024 has brought you joy, positivity, and exciting possibilities, and that your Christmas was filled with warmth, laughter, and the company of loved ones, and friends. As we transition from the festive period into the new year, it's a perfect time for reflection and new beginnings.

For those of you tuning in for the first time, I'm on the autism spectrum, and on this podcast, I share my personal experiences, aiming to inspire hope in others on a similar path. I connect fortnightly, exploring various aspects of life through my unique perspective.

Over the years, I've witnessed significant improvement in myself, especially in my language development and communication skills. I used to approach language quite literally, interpreting more complicated forms of it, like idioms and other phrases in a straightforward manner. However, as time went on, I've learned to appreciate the nuances and figurative meanings behind these expressions.

But this episode is all about the exciting topic—the festive season! It’s a time for joy, celebration, and, of course, a bit of fun. Inspired by my recent holiday moments with close family and relatives, I couldn't wait to create this episode.

As I plan this in early January, the holiday season is gently coming to a close. You might now wonder why didn't I didn't do this episode in the times just before Christmas and New Year? Well, let me share a thought with you.

As I’m sure you’ll all know, the holiday season is a time of joy, gatherings, and festivities, making it easy for things to become rather hectic. I wanted to savour such precious moments with family and other close relatives, and I'm sure you had your own wonderful experiences that made the season special.

So here I am, extending the festive energy. Let's make this post-holiday episode a delightful journey into the language of the holidays. Let’s reminisce about the wonderful phrases that make this season unique, and I'm eager to give you, my fantastic listeners, a chance to share your thoughts and reflections on the festive idioms that may resonate with you.

Whether you're still savouring the last moments of holiday cheer or diving into the exciting opportunities the new year can bring, I'm thrilled to have you here with me. Let's explore the magic of language together.

Idioms (4:28 - 10:22)

To start with, in simple terms, idioms are phrases that don’t literally mean what they say. Instead, they carry metaphorical and figurative meanings. Here are some idioms I thought about when looking back at the festive season.

Idiom number 1. Going to town

This idiom means doing something with great energy and enthusiasm. As I strolled through the neighbourhood, I couldn't help but notice how some folks really go to town with their outdoor Christmas lights and decorations. The enthusiasm for me in such displays mirrors the joy of the season.

Idiom number 2. Proof is in the pudding

Thinking about Christmas puddings brought this idiom to mind. It's about making judgments once we've experienced something. Take, for example, my attempt at a shepherd's pie. A small miscalculation on the potatoes led to a bit of improvisation, but in the end, everybody enjoyed the pie, proving that the proof is indeed in the pudding.

Idiom number 3. Christmas comes but only once a year

Christmas is the time of year when indulging in sweet treats seems practically mandatory. At the same time, it's also the season for generosity, where we might decide to go that extra mile on a special gift for someone. After all, Christmas does come but once a year, right?

Idiom number 4. Be there with bells on

This idiom can signal excitement about an upcoming event. For me, it's about being there with bells on, using my musical talents to spread joy and entertain during the festivities.

This idiom came alive for me in a unique way during a Christmas celebration at church. Picture this: a festive gathering with many in attendance. Some arrived literally with bells, as bells could be brought along if one wished.

As the service unfolded, the atmosphere filled with the joyful sound of ringing bells, adding a whimsical touch to the occasion. It was a delightful embodiment of being there with bells on, which, for me, turned the event into a joyful and memorable celebration.

Idiom number 5. The more the merrier

Have you ever noticed how events can seem to sparkle with joy and excitement when more people are present? The more, the merrier indeed. I find festive gatherings can often bring increased opportunities to reconnect with those we might not see often.

Idiom number 6. Wrapping Up

I thought back to the moment when I was wrapping up presents. Just as the final moments on Christmas Eve could involve wrapping up presents, the idiom "wrapping up" signifies the completion of a task or bringing things to a close.

Idiom number 7. Ring in the new year

As the clock strikes midnight on December 31st, we all welcome in the new year or, as we could say, ring in the new year. This can be time to reflect on, be hopeful of, and embrace what may lie ahead.

And the final idiom, which is idiom number 8. Out with the old, in with the new

Now, as we’ve entered the new year, it's not just about resolutions; it's a mindset. Out with the old, embracing new goals, opportunities, and a fresh start. For me, it’s a time for renewal and openness to new possibilities.

Idioms are like ornaments on a Christmas tree in my view. They can capture the spirit of the season and the transition into the new year. I don’t see them as just phrases. I see them as echoes of experiences, reflections of traditions, and invitations to embrace the joy of change.

Listener interaction (10:27 - 11:56)

Now, my wonderful listeners, it’s your turn.  As I’ve just talked about some festive related idioms with you, I'm curious to know if any of them resonated with your own experiences during the holiday season. Have you found yourself "going to town" with Christmas decorations, or maybe you've encountered a situation where the "proof is in the pudding"?

Take the time to reflect on your favourite idioms, and the joy they may have added to your festive experiences.

Here, I’m offering you an invitation to share your own favourite festive idioms or phrases. Maybe there's an idiom or phrase that perfectly captures the spirit of this time for you.

Resolutions for blog and podcast (14:59 - 17:17)

And now, I want to share some exciting resolutions for my blog and podcast as I continue with them into the new year.

In my podcast, I’ve seen noticeable and steady growth, particularly towards the end of 2023, with nearly 500 downloads at the time of recording this. But I’m aiming to reach even higher this year, setting my sights on breaking into the 1,000s. It's not just a number; it's about creating content that resonates, engages, and leaves a lasting impact.

And now to my blog. The highest monthly pageviews for 2023 reached just above 5,000, and during two months of the last year, I welcomed over 1,000 unique visitors in each of them. Now, for 2024, I’m setting my vision even higher. I’m aiming for at least 10,000 pageviews, a community of avid readers who find value in what I share.

And here's a big reveal: I'm thrilled to announce plans for a dedicated Facebook page! This page will be more than a virtual space; it will be a community hub. It will be a place where you and I, along with fellow listeners and readers, can share experiences, insights, and tips. Together, we can make managing autism not just a journey, but a fun and supportive adventure.

As I embark on these exciting endeavours, any support and engagement can mean the world. Stay tuned for updates and, as always, your thoughts and ideas will be welcomed.

Next Episode Teaser (17:21 - End)

In the next episode, my plan is to delve into the magical world of language once again. I’ll explore a topic, a topic that’s of great interest to me – my own personal poems of hope. Picture this: rhyming words dancing at the ends of the lines, weaving tales of resilience and optimism.

In my opinion, they aren’t just poems. They're also a journey into the depths of metaphorical language, where every verse tells a story of hope, growth, and the beauty found in my unique perspectives, personal experiences and interests.

Join me as I aim to unravel the threads of language, explore the power of words to paint vivid pictures of hope, and perhaps even spark your own poetic inspiration.

Get ready to immerse yourself in the rhythmic cadence of personal narratives and the uplifting melody of language.

Thank you for being a part of this journey. Here's to a year of growth, connection, and making strides together. Until next time, take care, stay curious, and keep the festive spirit alive. Happy listening!
